PLAAY

PLAAY-Preventing Long-term Anger & Aggression in Youth
Mentoring Youth to assist with understanding and managing behavioral life stressors through activities/sports/communication to deter them from chronic absenteeism and suspension.

Overview

PLAAY (Preventing Long-term Anger & Aggression in Youth) uses sports, i.e. basketball, other physical activities to observe youth at play, interacting with one another, to see where and how anger arises and how it can be addressed to prevent a cycle of negative behavior.

Program

Hartford Knights Youth Organization (HKYO) provides a behavioral and physical enrichment program for youths who have been identified as high-risk of failing in classes, misbehaving/acting out, and absenteeism/suspension. These youth have or are planning to be displaced or suspended from their traditional school-based environment. Our goal is to reduce the number of school suspensions and provide youth with opportunities to strengthen their academic, social and behavioral skills by providing tools to help identify their personal stressors and change impulsive reactions to proactive and conscious interactions.

HKYO staff work with youth in making positive life and academic choices using sports, non-sports activities, and casual group sessions to show students a variety of ways to manage anxiety, understand their physical and mental stress points, and increase their self-esteem to communicate positively when confronted with difficult situations and everyday interactions.

We encourage students to challenge themselves by participating in the areas of:

  • Pre & Post Assessments (Surveys).
  • Behavioral Management – “4 What’s Next” Modules and toolkit project.
  • Strong &Positive Communications (Circle Time / Role-Play).
  • Positive Peer Relationships through group activities and projects.
  • Participate and physical activities, i.e., basketball, volleyball, agility exercises, drills, etc.
